4800022 Prescribed Fire Site preparation for natural regeneration of shortleaf pine - hardwood mixture is accomplished by chainsaw felling of residual hardwoods immediately after full leaf expansion in the spring followed by a hot broadcast burn in late summer. This sequence of treatments reduces sprouting vigor of hardwoods without the use of herbicides. New hardwood sprouts originate lower on the root stocks providing better quality regeneration, reducing the liklihood of stem decay. Some hardwood sprouts have resprouted after the burn.
