Agroforests on streep slopes, Tutuila Island. People in American Samoa have little flat land for agriculture, so farming takes place on steep slopes above the narrow coastal plane. Much of the native forest on Tutuila has been replaced with agroforest and various stages of fallow. Local custom allows a family to claim land within their clan lands by clearing it of forest.
