Description: 1. Flowering shoot with male (a - f) and female (g, h) catkins. - 2. Branchlet with immature fruit clusters (a, b). - 3. Ripe fruit clusters. - 4. Ripe fruit - a ribbed nut - as located at the base of a three-lobed bract. - 5. Fruit as seen in two aspects (a, b). - 6. Seedling viewed from above (a) and below (b) with cotyledons and first ordinary leaf. - 7. Winter-branchlet with vegetative buds; twin-buds at a and b. - 8.
