Descriptor: Planting
Description: Transplants are grown when the customer wants a larger, more robust plant. A typical transplant is grown for one year, and then planted back into nursery beds and grown for another 1 to 2 years. Nurseries either grow seedlings specifically for transplanting, or use smaller stock that have been graded for transplanting. Mechanical transplanters use a vertical "shoe" to open the soil, and a wheel with clips places the seedlings into the slit at the proper spacing.
