I recently retired from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection after 35 years as an aquatic biologist. My specialty is aquatic vegetation and my passion is maintaining native biodiversity. Near the end of my career, I became alarmed at the impact of the invasive exotic Island Apple Snail (Pomacea insularum) on aquatic and wetland plant communities in the infested of Northwest Florida. This highly fecund snail has a voracious appetite, and the damage it can cause is extensive, even thorough. That is why I started a business to fight their expansion, called Snail Busters, LLC. We have an effective trap and bait. I also started a website to facilitate networking of resource managers and research scientists who share my concern about this snail. |
