This species is known to frequently kill drought-stressed pines in the Davis Mountains. We were unable to collect any adults to confirm the species. To my knowledge, however, the southern pine beetle has never been collected from the Davis Mountains, although it attacks ponderosa pine in Arizona and New Mexico
