1435130 azalea bark scale Eriococcus azaleae They have rather soft scales and soft bodies covered with a white powdery wax. Mealybugs eat plants by sucking sap and producing honeydew, which attracts ants and supports the growth of sooty- mold fungi.
1440114 green peach aphid Myzus persicae The green peach aphid is a pale green, soft- bodied insect that is found in clusters on the underside of tobacco leaves. The 1/16-inch long "plant lice" use their sucking mouthparts to remove sap from the plants. Feeding by large numbers of aphids results in thin, lightweight leaves that may ripen prematurely. The sugar rich "honeydew" excreted by aphids builds up on the leaf surface and supports growth of black, sooty mold. The honeydew may cause leaves to stick together and cure to a dark, off-color of poor quality. Green peach aphids may transmit viruses such as tobacco vein mottling virus through their mouthparts. Aphid populations build up after winged females fly into tobacco fields, usually during the middle portion of the growing season. They settle on the leaf to feed and give birth to living young. Large populations can build up in a short period of time due to their short life cycle and the occurrence of several generations during a growing season.

1626024 soft scales Parthenolecanium spp. Female scale insects lay their eggs under their bodies or scale covers. When they first hatch, young scales have legs and are quite active. At this stage, they are called crawlers. Crawlers disperse, locate new feeding sites, and then transform into immobile adults.

1626029 wax scales Ceroplastes spp. Wax scale is an easily recognized pest of azalea, camellia, Chinese holly, and many other ornamental plants.
1626036 obscure scale Melanaspis obscura Primarily found on oaks, this pest causes dieback of branches, limbs, and sometimes entire trees. Inexperienced observers often mistake these scales for flakes of bark even at close range.
1626033 euonymus scale Unaspis euonymi Enonymus scale has two to three generations per year and can build up until whole plants are covered by scales.
1626034 euonymus scale Unaspis euonymi Male and female enonymus scales are so different in appearance that they are often mistaken for different species. The males are small, narrow, and white and occur primarily on the leaves.
1626003 aphids Aphids feed in colonies. They have plump, pear-shaped bodies and two tubes, or cornicles, which project like exhaust pipes from their abdomens.

1150115 giant bark aphid Longistigma caryae The giant bark aphid is the largest aphid in North America. During December 2001 and through most of March 2002, an outbreak of this aphid was found covering about the eastern quarter of Texas. They mainly attacked oak trees, especially live oak and water oak. Natural enemies, such as lady beetles, played an important role in controlling aphid populations. During winter months when temperatures are cold, predator and parasite insects are not very active, and this may be the reason aphid populations became so large early in 2002.
