Fred Brooks is an applied Plant Pathologist with special interests in wood decay fungi and plant-pathogenic algae. After graduating in 1994, he spent three years as a US Peace Corps Volunteer in the Maltese Islands, followed by an additional year as Plant Pathologist for the Maltese Department of Agriculture. From 1998 to 2007, he was a research pathologist at the Land Grant facility in American Samoa. His projects included work on banana bunchy top disease, black leaf streak disease (black Sigatoka), brown root rot, plant-parasitic algae, pathogenic nematodes of banana, and taro leaf blight disease. He is currently working at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the Pesticide Safety Education Program and for Dr. Y. Cho on molecular plant-microbe interactions.
