4723027 cultural practices The most famous landmark on the Island of Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia--Sokehs Rock, also called "The Diamond Head of micronesia"--is seen here from an agroforest on Lengur Islet, just off shore. 4723019 cultural practices Agroforests on streep slopes, Tutuila Island. People in American Samoa have little flat land for agriculture, so farming takes place on steep slopes above the narrow coastal plane. Much of the native forest on Tutuila has been replaced with agroforest and various stages of fallow. Local custom allows a family to claim land within their clan lands by clearing it of forest. This view is to the SE from the ridge above the Village of Alega, 17 degrees 38 min. W Long.; 14 degrees 17 min. S. Lat. Photo taken July, 1984.
